This easy will discuss the critical comparison of these two online news stories, and through comparing the biography, target users and story of each service to help analyze.

In 2016-17, ABC used all its social media channels to share original content of its content, team production and other parts of ABC.
As mentioned in ABC’s annual report (2017) said that the most significant criterion of ABC is the audience’s opinion on the value, quality, and uniqueness of its content and services. The comparison of journalism writing
CNN news gave a summary of Trump’s proposal and listed criticisms of Trump’s proposal by people in different social roles. The journalist divided two individual parts, immigration and plan, carefully analyze the proposal, and combined with the views of the relevant officials, showing Trump’s motives and other purposes.
The source of news is reliable official news and has absolute accuracy, for example, the dialogue which comes from White House officials, law enforcement officials, and civil liberty organizations. Journalists used explicit language, such as absurd, uptick in funding, to show their attitude to the proposal accurately.
The ABC news reported a summary of Trump’s proposal firstly, then the reporter described the key points put forward by Trump in the order of the speech and inserted a description of the impact of the epidemic of opioid drugs. Finally, the journalist showed the prediction of events in the professional field.
This resource comes from Trump’s speech. The reporter accurately relayed Trump’s statement. The journalist showed the serious consequences of opiate drugs in the form of explicit language and numbers. Finally, the journalist used dialogue of professor to predict the development trend of the proposal professionally.
The content of CNN news is broader than that of ABC news. Under the same thesis, CNN news focuses on feedback and extension of events, while ABC news reports on the surface of events. It does not mean that ABC news is not professional. The adaptability principle in writing for the web is the journalist need consider which content could be adapted by users’ interest (Bradshaw, 2018, p.79). Stepinska (2014) said that: “ Community characteristics influence messages.” (P.198). The target audiences’ interest could become a reason for affecting content.
The primary target of CNN is an American audience. According to the research of MIT Media Lab (2012), it said that “the audience of CNN tends to lean to the political left—but prefers their news to be neutral.”(p.2). This event of the news is about the political field in the United States. American audiences need more detailed, more comprehensive, and more in-depth reports of events to understand its feedback and development trends, to analyze whether they will be affected by the development of their events.
The primary target of ABC is Australians. Their reports on American political news only need to reach the level of understanding. Because this American political proposal does not affect Australia’s policy, a brief account of the events and the prospect will be more popular with Australian viewers.
Bradshaw (2018) had said that chunking is an excellent way to help journalist write a more extended feature (p.77). Because CNN and ABC are not a simple news description, the journalists in these two services use the form of chunking to report, which helps the user to scan the content; it also helps the content of news could be easily searched on the search engine by users.
Scanning is the overall effect of writing and formatting technology, which makes up for the fact that most people do not read web content (Bradshaw, 2018, p.80). For the news of CNN, a word is used to represent a subtitle to help the article display the structure, which can only tell the reader the subject of the next paragraph and can’t tell the content. It cannot help users understand the information on the page, or whether the page contains content for which they are looking. ABC news uses sentences to make headlines, which sufficiently shows scans. In this sense, ABC news has better scan performance than CNN news.
The comparison of online delivery
Hypertext: CNN and ABC news use hypertext links to link to other related articles so that readers can learn more background. “Hypertext has advantages when readers are performing a certain task with the particular text” (McKnight, 1991, p.63). The hyperlinks inlaid into the text can quickly find the content of the link by clicking on the text, and let the reader quickly understand the relevant background without forgetting the news information. A single link can enable readers to expand their knowledge after reading the article, but users will easily ignore this form of links.
Bradshaw (2018) said that: “Stories might be accessed on desktop, mobile phones, or any other internet-connected device (p.73)”. CNN and ABC news can share articles to users’ social media platforms, such as mail, Facebook, and Twitter. The benefits is that can bring more clicks rate and change the way to display news, for example, from a computer monitor to a mobile phone screen, it is easier to read.
There has a different part in the ABC news. There are some tag links associated with the theme of the article at the bottom of the article, which allows readers to know more about the relevant knowledge so that the users could not be limited to content what journalist give them.
Multimediality: CNN and ABC news reports all use the video media at the beginning. “ multimedia integrates various document formats, or data which intermediate or imitate reality” (Klement, 2017, p.55). Video can bring users the sense of vision and auditory, allowing users to feel the atmosphere of events. CNN and ABC news showed Trump’s speech video which made the audi ence know the event very quickly and vivid. The combination form of a single multimedia report is not enough to attract more users to read articles. These two websites need to combine more media forms to report articles, such as the use of the memes.
Interactivity: Bradshaw (2018) said that the characteristic of interactivity is the user could engage with journalist and content (p.73). CNN and ABC News did not reflect the interaction between users and computers, users and users. The reason is that the journalist uses the website as a platform for news, not a social platform, so there has not interact community or conversation. The interactivity is more critical for CNN news than ABC news because the topic of this article is about American politics. If there has an innovative proposal that is setting up a questionnaire under the CNN News that could make sure many people’s agree with Trump’s proposal. Through simple click, let more people know other people’s idea, indirectly reflect the interactivity between people.
The comparison of technical delivery
Both CNN and ABC news can link with other related articles. They have the functions of sharing button which could share news to multiple social platforms. CNN news has more media sharing platforms than ABC news, and the design of icons is more beautiful than ABC news. It can attract more audiences to share and make more different platform users could read.
When opening CNN news, the video resources embedded in CNN news will play automatically. “There was no way for the users to “peek” into the content of video” (Pathan, 2013, p.38). This design will be disappointing when users don’t want to watch the video at the beginning. When sliding down the page with the mouse on the CNN news website, the video and the button of sharing is going to jump out of the original location and be zoomed and follow the distance of mouse movement. There is a humanized design that helps users listening to the news while watching the news.
In conclusion, the publication of an excellent online journalism needs these conditions: the form of the article tends to chunking; the content caters to the interest of the target users; the description of the article is accurate, and the recuperation is apparent; reporting by a variety of media forms; an open interactive community or conversation; and the use of humanized functional design.
