Living Abroad: A Day in the Life of Laura Bieda

The Gate to Nowhere - Physics Building @ University of Sydney

Two months ago Laura flew across the world, from Germany to Australia, to study on exchange at the University of Sydney. Today she is embracing Sydney life to it’s fullest – but not without challenges.

“It’s very social,” she says. “There’s so many things I want to do while I’m here.”

While walking around campus, Laura stops to admire the beauty of the University’s heritage architecture.

Sunshine, optimism and laughter are all a common fixture of Laura’s outlook on the exchange process – but financial stress looms heavy for her and many international students alike.

“What makes it hard to live in Sydney is the prices of housing,” she said.

“As an exchange student, you want to get out and do things, and that takes a lot of money.”
